Complications from diabetes can occur in the mouth. The best-known` complication is severe gum disease, called periodontitis. Other issues in the mouth can include:
- tooth decay
- a dry mouth
- fungal infections
- slow or poor healing of wounds in the mouth
- difficulty tasting foods
The risk of developing severe gum disease is greater when blood sugar levels are not well controlled. When blood sugars are controlled, the risk of severe gum disease is the same as someone without diabetes.
There is scientific research showing a two-way relationship between gum disease and diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk of developing severe gum disease, but the gum disease may also negatively affect your blood sugar levels.
Patients with diabetes should be encouraged to have regular check-ups with a dental professional, particularly those with newly diagnosed or poorly controlled diabetes.
