Scientific research has shown that severe gum disease called periodontitis has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes. This includes low birthweight, early births and pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure).
Early scientific evidence shows links between periodontitis and adverse pregnancy outcomes. They think these links occur because of:
- an overall increase in inflammation
- bacteria traveling from the mouth to the placenta.
Hormone changes when you are pregnant can also affect your gums. Gums can be more sensitive to mouth bacteria causing inflammation. If your bleeding gums do not improve with good brushing and flossing, it is important to see your dentist for them to check your gums.
