Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline are diseases involving the brain. These diseases affect a person’s memory, thinking and behaviour.
Severe gum disease, called periodontitis, is caused by bacteria in the mouth. The bacteria causes inflammation.
There is scientific research that shows a link between Alzheimer's disease and periodontitis. Severe gum disease may contribute to Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline. This is due to:
- bacteria traveling from the mouth to the brain
- an increase in inflammation in the body.
The bacteria that cause severe gum disease can travel to other areas of the body through the bloodstream. They have been found in areas of the brain responsible for memory.
This is early research. More research is needed.
